Creative Mentoring

Shoreditch Trust works in partnership with creative organisations to provide Creative Mentoring to local residents.

Chelsea-Shoreditch Trust Creative Workshops
Chelsea-Shoreditch Trust Creative Workshops was a partnership pilot project between University of The Arts London and Shoreditch Trust in July 2016.

Graduate Fine Art students worked with Shoreditch Trust to produce a series of summer workshops for people living in Hackney and those who are part of the City and Hackney Wellbeing Network. Workshops took place at the Healthy Living Centre and in a Health Hub, offering the opportunity for locals to come together and try something new.

The sessions encouraged participants to unlock their creativity, express themselves, broaden horizons and connect with others.

The workshops covered different creative areas and took place over a week:

Workshop 1: Exploring Food and Art for Young People Aged 18 – 30 years
Workshop participants looked at International artists, recipes and food to explore the links between politics, art and food – how food brings people and cultures together.

In the workshop, participants shared recipe ideas and used drawing techniques to explore these themes and produce a recipe book.

Workshop 2: Photography and Collage workshop: Exploring Identity for Adults
In the workshop participants explored how identity can be changed through movement and expression. They documented this with photography and selfies and combined these to make a layered, colourful collage to share experiences within the group.

Workshop 3: Art Gallery Walk and Talk with Collage for Adults
Participants went on a walking tour of Art galleries in Shoreditch to learn about artist’s work, using sketch books to explore ideas along the journey. On return to the Healthy Living Centre they used these sketches to create drawings, experimenting with a range of materials.

Workshop 4: ‘Zine Workshop: Making a small, creative magazine for Adults
An opportunity to make a small magazine, or "zine", as a creative project. The zines can be made out of fabric, paper, or other materials. They group did cutting, sewing, and paper marbling, as well as drawing, writing, and whatever else they chose to include. These were combined to make a small book to take away at the end.

Workshop 5: Movement and Drawing workshop for Carers/Parents and Children aged 0-3 years
An opportunity for parents, carers and their small children to join others in a fun and creative movement and drawing workshop, including interactive story time. A great lunch was enjoyed together at the end.

Creative Mentoring Project for Young People
Shoreditch Trust, in partnership with the University of the Arts London, developed a unique Creative Mentoring project working with young people from east London and creative organisations based in Shoreditch.

2013’s programme saw ten young people complete six month placements with organisations and practitioners, working within their own disciplines in:
Film (3angrymen Productions)
Digital (Harmony Park)
Fine Art (Louisa Martin)
Sound Recordings (Hoxton Radio)
Architecture and Exhibition Design (Nissen Richards Studio)
Exhibition Curation and Workshops (PEER)

The Creative Mentoring project culminated in the Reflections exhibition as part of Shoreditch Festival’s Hoxton Street Party on 13th and 14th July at PEER Gallery, and was subsequently available to view at the launch of The Trust’s iNDUSTRY East Road creative workspace.

Shoreditch Trust and UAL’s Widening Participation department have worked in partnership on a number of projects recognising the value of academic process and engaging young people directly with creative and tech industries.

The project aimed to give young people an understanding of the processes of design, development and creative thinking – with clear links to educational paths.
