Shoreditch Trust, working with residents of the Kingsland Basin and British Waterways has brought a disused 1930s hopper barge back into use – as a floating allotment.
The project is part of the London Mayor’s Capital Growth Initiative, which aims to create 2012 new food-growing spaces in the capital by 2012. The barge provides 33 square meters of allotment space for food growing. In the near future power to operate its pumps and any tools will be provided through the installation of photovoltaic paving slabs that Shoreditch Trust is developing in partnership with Lottolab Studio.
